Only 52 days left and Summer 2016 will be the books. In the meantime, we still have some great activities as part of our Summer Camp program for your kids to participate in. Our summer camp has been going strong with our largest number of registrations this August. Don’t wait until the last minute to sign-up, spaces are limited and going fast! Now is also a great time to get your kids signed up for swim lessons or one of our pre-swim team groups: Manta Rays or Tidal Waves. You can read more about our summer camp program in the summer camp section below.

Also below is our employee spotlight on our new Kid’s Dance instructor, Mae Chesney. Register now, as the spots will fill up fast with such a great instructor leading!

Aside from the kid’s activities, we will also be offering Ballroom Dance lessons for adults starting in September, led by our fabulous instructor, Domonick. Domonick’s dance lessons continue to be immensely popular, and will help you learn all the right moves on the dance floor. You might be able to showcase a few of those moves at our upcoming Jazz event, also in September. Our first Jazz night to kick-off the season will be this September 30th with Rebecca Faiola and her band, JetBlacq, performing “Strictly Sinatra”. Dinner will be provided with a free wine tasting. You can order your tickets from the front desk now. See the programs and announcements section for more info.

As for the latest construction update, we are still waiting for each individual department to sign-off on our plans, and for our scheduled public hearing date. So far everything is going smoothly. I want to thank all of you for your patience. I would also like to thank all of you for obeying the traffic signs, keeping traffic flowing in front of the club, and not parking on the street across from the club. We are doing our best to be good neighbors here on Manzanita and your assistance in this is vital.

Jazz event
The Hills is pleased to announce that JetBlacq will be performing for us again on Friday, September 30th. You may remember the “Jingles with JetBlacq” event from December 4th featuring our member Rebecca Faiola as the enchanting vocalist. We can’t wait for their upcoming “Strictly Sinatra” show to grace our clubhouse next month. Join us for a rat-pack style evening of music, food, drinks, and socializing. Sign-up at the front desk or by calling (510) 339-0234. Only 60 spots available so be sure to sign-up ASAP! Tickets are $30 (excluding tax) for members and $35 for non-members and includes entrance to the show and dinner. Dinner will be served at 6:30pm and the show starts at 7pm. You’re welcome to BYOB and a complimentary wine tasting may be provided. More details will follow in the next newsletter so keep an eye out! We look forward to seeing you all there.

The Hills closing early
The Hills will be closing early at 9pm on Friday, August 12th, for a Staff appreciation event. Please plan your workout accordingly. Thank you for your cooperation.

Try functional fitness
Attention all members: we have two exciting programs for you to try; our Functional Fitness program, available twice per week, and our Small Group Training class, available 5 days per week!

Functional Fitness is available on Sundays, 8 - 9am, and Tuesdays 7:30 - 8:30pm. Functional Fitness is intense, innovative, and fun. Try it and see for yourself! Almost every day of the week, we have a Small Group Training class for you to join. Enjoy the small and intimate setting of 1-8 people which allows for personalized attention from one of our great instructors.

Tuesdays, 6:30 - 7:15am and Fridays, 9:15 - 10am TRX

Take advantage of Nia’s new offer!
By popular request, we are moving the NIA class to Wednesday Night. Starting August 17th, NIA’s new time will be 7:15pm on Wednesdays to accommodate your schedule. We’re excited to end our day with this nice and relaxing workout. Come join us! Hope to see you there.

imgRegister for Pre-swim team’s fall season
Manta Rays and Tidal Waves continues through Fall. These introductory classes are best for kids age 4-10 new to swimming. The coaches work in and out of the water teaching everything from basic swimming skills to full stroke technique, all while introducing the kids to swimming terminology. The two levels are thirty minutes in length and use the recreation pool and diving well. Classes fill up fast.

Session 9 Aug 31 - Sept 23
Session 10 Sept 28 - Oct 21
Session 11 Oct 26 - Nov 18

Manta Rays (Pre-Swim Team) AGE 4-8, 4 - 4:30pm, Wednesdays & Fridays
Swimmers will learn the basics of all four swimming strokes. Team activity skills and group swim safety is introduced. Swimmers will learn to swim in, and jump or dive into, deep water. Instruction will be conducted in and out of the water.

Tidal Waves (Novice Swim Team) AGE 6-10, 4:30 - 5pm, Wednesdays & Fridays
Swimmers must pass the following prerequisites for swim team: *50 yards of freestyle with side breathing, *25 yards of back swimming, *treading water for 30 seconds, and *streamlining off the wall for 5 yards. This group will prepare swimmers for competitive swim team and will incorporate on-deck coaching with minimal in water instruction.

Tryout for Swim Team
Tryouts for the competitive program will be at 5:00pm on Monday, August 22nd, and Wednesday, August 24th. Swimmers will need to complete the prerequisite for swim team at this time. We have limited space in our entry level groups for the Fall Season.

Fall swim team starts on August 22nd.

imgEmployee Spotlight: Mae Chesney
We are thrilled to welcome Mae Chesney to our Pilates Studio team! Mae is a STOTT certified Pilates instructor. She is also a ballet and fitness instructor in the East Bay, and a professional ballet dancer. Mae has taught fitness and dance for 6 years. Her students range from ballerinas as young as 3 years old, up to adults in ballet, barre, and Pilates training. Mae has appeared as a professional ballet dancer in several companies and productions including: Menlo Ballet, Columbus Dance Theater, and Platinique featured at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco. Mae feels passionate about anatomy, and physical health and fitness, and wishes to share her knowledge with her clients to help them achieve their highest fitness goals. You can train with Mae in one of our many reformer classes, as she is picking up several classes over the summer. Don't miss Mae's new class in the fall; a brand new “Intro to Reformer” class for beginners to Pilates.

Enroll your kids for our Hills’ Children’s dance program
Fall semester is coming up! Pre-Ballet for children 3-­5 years old and Intro to Dance for children 6+ (or younger with previous dance experience) starts Monday, September 11th, and ends on Monday, December 12th with a dance recital. Our dance classes are taught by dance instructor and professional ballet dancer, Hannah Westbrook.

➢ Pre-Ballet, Mondays, 3:15-­4pm
➢ Intro to Dance, Mondays, 4­-5pm
➢ Cost: Try the first class for $16. Registration for full semester, $196.

Summer is flying by fast but we still have four more weeks of camp available. Registration can be done easily online or in person. Free Clinics with Eddie
Join USPTA Elite Professional Eddie Pasternak for free one-hour tennis clinics at The Hills! Eddie has taught tennis for over 25 years and has been sought after by clubs and resorts across the world, including France and Jamaica where he previously worked as a Tennis Instructor. Eddie has also worked with professional Tennis players, such as former pro Brad Gilbert. Eddie is most thrilled to be a part of a Tennis player’s progression, and be able to see the change. Eddie leads clinics each month that address all ages and skill levels. If it’s raining on one of the Clinic dates, the clinic will be held either the next day or the following weekend.
➢ Saturday, August 13th Intermediate/Advanced, noon

imgimgFREE Kids’ Tennis Clinic
Tennis is great for teaching children social skills and, sometimes, for easing emotional problems such as stress and depression, while promoting physical fitness. To help create more opportunities for your children to grow and learn, Instructors Lexi Bevins and David Siu will be hosting another FREE kids’ tennis clinic. The event will be held on Saturday, August 27th, 2016, from 11am-12pm. The age limit for the event is 5-12 years old. Tennis rackets can be provided by The Hills if necessary. Lexi would like to remind you to “please wear appropriate close-toed shoes and bring a water bottle!” Sign-ups for this opportunity are at the front desk, or you can call (510) 339-0234.
