Employee Spotlight: Barbara Roessler
“Breathe.”“Be kind to yourself.”
“Be a yoga detective.”
“Be the change.”
These are some of the phrases you might hear in her yoga classes. Our employee spotlight for this month, Barbara Roessler, has been teaching yoga for almost two decades. She continues to evolve and grow her own practice and consequently her teaching also evolves.
Growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, Barbara has lived here most of her life. She has been a regular yoga teacher for 14 years here at The Hills. Her passion, drive, and dedication to yoga has inspired many of our members to continue going to her class week after week. As quoted by Barbara: “I continue to learn and evolve my knowledge of the body. I am fascinated by the science of movement, biomechanics and fascia. I feel profound gratitude to my students who continue to educate and support me. Teaching is a two-way street, we have a great time.”
Some of her hobbies include spending time with her family, walking, visiting museums, dancing the Tango, Zydeco, and West Coast Swing. Something we did not know about her: Barbara has a degree in Hotel and Restaurant.
When you see Barbara around The Hills, please congratulate her for being the employee spotlight for the month of April.
Aquatics
Prepare for Swim Team
Join our pre comp groups and prepare for swim team. We can start kids on the competitive team at age 5, so make sure to get your kids ready. Swim team runs year round!Pre-Competitive Swim Team
Manta Rays (Pre-Swim Team) AGE 4-8, 4:00pm - 4:30pm on Wednesdays & Fridays
Swimmers will learn the basics of all four swimming strokes as well as how to swim in, and jump or dive into deep water. Team activity skills and group swim safety is introduced. Instruction will be conducted in and out of the water.
Tidal Waves (Novice Swim Team) AGE 6-10, 4:30 - 5:00pm on Wednesdays & Fridays
Swimmers must pass the following prerequisites for swim team: *50 yards of freestyle with side breathing, *25 yards of back swimming, *treading water for 30 seconds, and *streamlining off the wall for 5 yards. This group will prepare swimmers for competitive swim team and will incorporate on-deck coaching with minimal in-water instruction.

Group Swim Lessons
Our summer group swim lessons are open for registration. Small group lessons are available for 10 weeks in the summer for ages 3+. Come join our Tadpoles, Minnow, Guppies, and Mackerel classes. Please view our offerings and register here!Junior Lifeguard Camp
Session 2 June 18 - 22 M-F 9am-3pmSession 8 July 30 - Aug 3 M-F 9am-3pm
This program is designed as a community-based water safety program for youths 10– 15 years old. The Junior Lifeguard Training Program has been developed to serve many purposes where water safety is our primary goal. Along with water safety activities we engage in CPR Certification and First Aid training. A secondary benefit is the unique combination of establishing the foundation for good work skills, responsibility, certification, skill development, competition, and leadership skills. In providing a well-rounded training experience, we include 30 minute daily fitness, lectures, demonstrations, and team building activities. An additional two hours per week of volunteering may be required by each JR guard. Course Prerequisite: 50 yards of freestyle or breaststroke. Retrieve a 10 LB. brick from a depth of 12 feet. Swim underwater 15 feet.

Summer Camp 2018!
Summer Camp 2018 is finally here!! Registration can be completed online. Register before May 1st and save 10% off your total for the camp. Here are a couple of steps to follow when registering for the summer:

- click on the icon to sign up for the activities
Once the registration is complete, you will be required to fill out a camp waiver form before the week your children is scheduled to attend. We had a few time changes during March. If you missed it, please refer to the online schedule. On Wednesday the 10:10 spin/core class shifted back to 10:00 and the Mat Pilates class went back to 11:00. Also, we brought back TBC (Total Body Conditioning) at 9:00 with Angelique. This new time allowed us to add a new spin class. Introducing our new Spin Express class on Mondays at 10:10. Designed to fit into your busy schedule, this class will give you a quick, cardio workout in 30 minutes. Spin Express starts with a 5-minute warm-up then moves into a 30-minute spin session. From there, stay and enjoy a deep stretch as Birgitte takes you through some lengthening exercises. Come for the spin and stay for the stretch if you can. You'll be glad you did!Pilates
Million dollar question: Can Reformer Pilates training replace strength training?
The short answer is yes. A typical reformer class of 55-60 minutes consists of multiple core, upper and lower body strengthening exercises, so you do get your strength training taken care of in class.
What differentiates Reformer Pilates training from the work you would do in the gym?
- Reformer Pilates tends to hone in on different muscles. Yes, you are working the lats and quads, just like in the gym, but you are also training the deep core stabilizers, the glutes and the smaller stabilizers of the shoulders. These are muscles that tend to be neglected in the gym (unless you have a great personal trainer who can specialize your workout).
- The focus and attention to detail. All strength training requires good form, however, in Pilates reformer classes with its small group format, your training and your form are closely supervised by the instructor and he or she may queue you on your breathing, your spinal alignment and even on where you place your gaze.
- Flexibility gains. In reformer Pilates we lengthen and strengthen. Every movement is done against supportive spring resistance with the purpose of working the muscles and joints at full range of motion and releasing them simultaneously. This training feels good, we are stretching while working out and it also makes the muscles stronger, as they can move at full range of motion, while making them more resistant to injuries. Tight, short muscles tend to be our weakest muscles.
- Pilates is mindful training that improves our balance and our mind/body connection, other benefits that may bolster us against injuries.
- Reformer Pilates can reduce muscle imbalances. Not only do we work different, deeper, and smaller muscles on the reformer, we also work the whole body towards greater symmetry in movement. No more dominant right leg, right side, weak left hip, etc.
- Improve posture. In our tech-centric world, we find ourselves suffering from pore posture and tight neck, back, and hip issues that can be mitigated by regular training on the Pilates reformer. Improvements don’t happen overnight, but regular Reformer Pilates training as been shown to combat many problems associated with sedentary computer work and with long commutes.
So should I ditch my gym workout if I start doing Reformer Pilates? No. If you are already working out in the gym and you are enjoying it, keep it up. Regular strength training and Reformer Pilates complement one another very well.
Can I cut back on strength workouts if I throw in a Reformer class? Yes. Replace one of your strength sessions with Reformer training and you will feel and see the results.

Come join for a great night of Jazz music and dinner! Our very own Eddie Pasternak and his band will be performing. Below are bio’s of each band member.
Eddie Pasternak: Guitar
Presenting the rare combination of musicianship, elegance, and infectious enthusiasm Eddie's guitar work has been a mainstay of the Bay Area's music scene for 30 yrs. A student of Warren Nunes and Joe Pass, and Tuck Andress. Eddie has played with Alumni from the world's greatest jazz bands: two years with pianist Tee Carson (Count Basie), four years with drummer Dave Black (Duke Ellington). Featured performances include sax great Stan Getz, and a long list of local favorites: Roger Glenn, Marcos Silva, Kenny Washington, Carlos Reyes, Larry Dunlap and Akira Tana.
He has taught extensively, proud to have introduced many aspiring players and listeners to the joys of jazz & Brazilian music. Music critic Lee Hildebrand describes him as a "remarkable guitarist who generates intense swing playing bass lines and chords simultaneously."
Roger Glenn: Vibes, Flute, Sax
Second-generation Jazz master, Roger Glenn, multi-instrumentalist, composer and entertainer on the flute, sax, clarinet and vibraphone, is the son of the late Tyree Glenn, one of 57 notable jazz musicians pictured in the historic photo “A Great Day in Harlem,” and who worked with jazz icons including Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway and Louis Armstrong.
Roger has performed, toured and recorded with jazz legends such as Dizzy Gillespie, Mongo Santamaria, Rosemary Clooney, Herbie Mann and Pete Escovedo. His flute playing is featured on the Grammy-award winning album “La Onda Va Bien” with Cal Tjader, as well as many notable recordings by Donald Byrd, Peaches and Herb, ConFunkShun, and Bobby Hutcherson.
In addition to his own Roger Glenn Latin Jazz Ensemble and The San Francisco Jazz Quartet, he most recently has been touring as a special guest with Taj Mahal, Kurt Elling, and The Count Basie Orchestra. Roger Glenn Jazz Organ Trio toured the west coast as the opening act for the legendary Steely Dan (spring 2015).

MARCOS SILVA - Piano, Synthesizer
Pianist, composer, arranger, producer and educator Marcos Silva performs worldwide. Nominated for two Grammys, he toured with many artists, including Paquito D’Rivera, Bud Shank, Claudio Roditi, Raul de Souza, Toninho Horta, Leny Andrade, Edu Lobo, Emilio Santiago, Dori Caymmi and many more. Marcos was musical director for Flora Purim and Airto Moreira for 24 years. He wrote arrangements for Dizzy Gillespie’s band and replaced Gil Evans as composer-arranger of Airto’s Spiritual Mass with a 63 piece orchestra in Germany. He is sought after as a producer of CDs, including two of his own. Marcos heads the Brazilian Music Department at the California Jazz Conservatory in Berkeley.
Leon Joyce Jr. - Drums

Leon Joyce, Jr., a native of Meriden, Connecticut, received his musical training through private instruction under John Oblon and Jimmy Rozelle. As a drummer, Leon has worked with a wide variety of top artists which include Ramsey Lewis, Nancy Wilson, Norman Connors, Tom Browne, Yve Evans, and many more. Leon is currently a regular with the Leon Joyce Trio, the Jamie Davis Quintet and the Sista Monica Band. He has performed at many of the top International Jazz Festivals, including Montreaux & Lugano Jazz Festivals in Switzerland and the Villingen Swing/Jazz Festival in Germany. Nationally, he has appeared in the MontereyJazz, Playboy Jazz and JVC Jazz Festivals in California, New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in Louisiana & the JVC Jazz Festival in Colorado.
Scott Thompson - Bass

Scott Thompson grew up in a family of celebrated musicians and musical educators. He has a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies from the California Jazz Conservatory in Berkeley, CA. An educator himself, Scott teaches ensembles, bass master classes, and workshops worldwide. He is much sought after as a studio musician. Scott tours and performs globally with Chico Pinheiro, Marcos Silva, Dick Hindman, Helio Alves, Tiago Costa, Rafael Vernet, Toninho Horta, Dani and Deborah Gurgel, Jovino Santos Neto, Thiago Rabello, Kiko Freitas, Rafael Barata, Leny Andrade, Vitor Gonçalves, Marcio Bahia, Edu Ribeiro, Celso Alberti, and Terrence Kelly.

Construction Update
Tennis Lights are being installed!
We have completed about 75% of the construction and are excited to have hopefully a few weeks left to go. I appreciate everyone’s patience while we will begin to work on areas to tie the buildings together. This will cause some noise and machines to be pulled out and we will do our best to keep the dust to a minimum.
Tennis court lights are currently being installed on Diablo tennis court and we should be able to play under the lights starting April 14th.
